This presentation will demonstrate an effective approach to working with Aboriginal clients who experience panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, through combining a mainstream western therapeutic model with an aboriginal cultural and spiritual approach. Through sacred ceremony: healing and talking circles, smudging with sweet grass and sage, sharing food, and attending sweat ceremonies, individuals report feeling cleansed "spiritually," "emotionally" and "physically." In conjunction with a traditional and cultural approach, various western strategies for treating panic disorder such as self regulation, creative visualization, grounding exercises, building self esteem, and when necessary may be combined with medication therapy to successfully reduce the incidence of panic attacks and to reduce the duration.
