Emotion regulation / stress management linked to Multitasking

I. S. Aneja

Multitasking allows people to cope with the ever changing and complex world that we live in. Although a lot of research has been carried out in the domain of multitasking however least is known about the impact of multitasking on emotion. In research work it was found that there exists a profound link between these domains.

A co-relation between switching ability (a component of multitasking that we bring up) and emotion regulation have been observed. Switching ability is defined as the ability of brain to voluntarily switch the flow of thoughts from one cognition to another.

The ability to switch thoughts is a skill that can be learnt through conditioning. In this paper this correlation is defined and it is proposed that if switching ability is learnt, then it would ease the process of voluntary emotion regulation by intermediating in the stimulus identification phase of emotion generation thereby being part of antecedent focused form of emotion regulation. We propose to use the conditioning on this ability as a treatment for emotional, mood and panic disorders including stress.
