'A little safer, a little happier'

Kirsten Flaten

Social anxiety / shyness can cause a lot of stress and social problems for children and adolescents. But, as for adults too, it is a topic often neglected and set aside by more extroverted conditions. Social anxiety can also be the cause of additional problems like low self esteem, depression, further anxiety, loneliness, etc. The presentation will review group therapy with 15 adolescent girls, with an agespan of 13 to 17 years.

Since this is a problem that occurs when together with others it is considered most effectively to deal with in a group setting. The activities in the group is based on habituation, to learn relaxation for stress reduction, awareness of nonverbal language signals and self presentation. The partisipants are divided into groups based on age, which seems to work out quite well. In one group several of the girls has a language deficit. For all of them there is a problem to speak in groups, to initiate conversation, a general lack of comfort and feeling of confidence. They also report to lack a feeling of what to do or say when in company of people outside their safe circle.

The therapy session includes some talking, but this is not the main activity during the group sessions. Mostly we work with body language, our own thoughts, goal setting, and we then share by talking about the exercises. In every group session the group shares a meal. People with social anxiety often find it hard to do things, like eating, while others watch them, and we want to work on this as well. We also include activities in the community.

The main goal with this group therapy is to make the girls feel more comfortable and able socially.
