Abstract
This study, part of an extended study on psychosocial factors associated with arterial blood pressure among Nigerian subjects was carried out in two Yoruba South Western Staes of Nigeria. Five(5) psychological tests, viz modified version of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS), Hypertension Symptoms Chechlist (HSC), Attitude to Hypertension Scale(AHS), Ezeilos, Semantic Diffrential Scale for Self Concept, and Type A Behaviour Pattern (TABP) were administered to 156 subjects made up of 52 hypertensives 104 normotensives. Pearson product moments correlation yeilded significantly positive relationship among some of the variables. A chi-square analysis did not produce any significant difference betwen hypertensives and normotensives in the various bio-data variables. A t-test of difference of means betwen hypertensives and normotensives produced significant difference in only 5 of the scales and the sub-scales of the psychological measures. As compared with studies in indusrial settings it was pointed out that cultural contents must be put into consideration in interpreting the inplications of psychosocial variables particularly during psychotherapeutic intervention for hypertensives particularly in developing contries. |
