Opioid Blockade and Lactate Panicogenesis in Normal Human Subjects

D. Kleine

Abstract

This preliminary study investigates whether acute opioid receptor blockade by naloxone pretreatment renders normal controls sensitive to the lactate panicogenic effects. The naloxone/lactate protocol may yield a laboratory model of nonfearful panic. Endorphinergic dysregulation may underlie separation anxiety, CO2 and lactate sensitivity, the hypothesized suffocation false alarm, and panic disorder.
